"Glee" is going global. Fox's first-year musical comedy, already a success in the US, is now starting to roll out across the world. And it seems local broadcasters are emulating the grass roots strategy used by Fox here in the States to help build buzz for the show. In the UK, for example, the pilot for "Glee" aired last week-- but the series itself won't officially debut until next month. Shades of Fox's decision last spring to preview the "Glee" pilot behind "American Idol," and then use the summer months to get die-hard fans to spread the word about the show. And in one of the coolest things we've seen this month, Fox Italy organized a flash mob of good-looking Italian youth to invade the Galleria Alberto Sordi (the most amazing mall we've ever seen, by the way) to perform a choreographed dance number to music from "Glee." Even though this was all probably choreographed by the local channel -- we're assuming this because the video shows giant posters of "Glee" in the background-- it's still pretty heartwarming to see everyday Italians clearly enjoying the inspirational music and dance. ![]() ELLE's Andrew Goldman recently did an interview with Glee's Matthew Morrison. Andrew Goldman appeared to be very rude and inconsiderate of Morrison while interviewing him. The full interview is not available unless you purchase the latest ELLE magazine according to ELLE.COM. Read the interview below. Was this not out of line? Vote at the bottom of this article! ELLE: So, Matt, you’re a musical theater star who’s been interviewed by The Advocate and much discussed on Manhunt.com, and you star in Glee, a program that’s referred to as “the gayest show on TV.” You must feel particularly proud being the first gay man to grace this page. MATTHEW MORRISON: I’m not gay. ELLE: I had indeed read in various places that you’re straight, but in light of the circumstantial evidence, I wasn’t sure. MM: I grew up singing and dancing, so people have been calling me gay since fifth grade. I’ve heard everything you could possibly hear about it. But I do love gay people, so I’m not going to act like I was insulted or angry about it. ELLE: But do you ever do anything to suppress your gayest traits? Like, on a club dance floor, will you keep a lid on your best moves in order not to look too much like Tommy Tune out there? MM: Oh, yeah. I’ll do what I refer to as “the shoulder dance,” just, you know, move my shoulders and do a little head bobbing. ELLE: What was the first moment you realized you were a heterosexual being? MM: I was really sexual from an early age. My first kiss was actually with two girls at the same time. One girl would be behind the bush with me for a minute and the other girl would be timing us. Then they’d switch. ELLE: Dirty! Who was your first sexual obsession from popular culture? MM: Tiffani-Amber Thiessen from Saved by the Bell. I loved her. ELLE: I heard an interview with Screech recently. He wrote a memoir that said she was easy. I think he referred to her as “Hollywood’s pass-around girl.” Who knows how reliable a source Screech is, but does hearing this make her more alluring? MM: No. You actually just killed it for me. Thank you very much for that. ELLE: Sorry. Now that you’ve worked on quite a bit of film and TV, has anything particularly embarrassing happened while in the proximity of a famous actress? MM: Besides constantly having to wipe the drool from my mouth? Not really. Last week, actually, I was in New York doing a workshop for a new musical with Jessica Biel, this beautiful Argentinean actor Mía Maestro, and Salma Hayek. I really like smart women, and [Hayek] is really brilliant. We went out to lunch a couple times. We had great conversations all week, and she, like, cried when she had to say goodbye to me. It was a great romance without having any real romance. |

Among Glee’s TV-pack-leading four Golden Globe nominations this morning were actor nods for stars Matthew Morrison, who plays William McKinley High School’s glee club coach Will Schuester, Lea Michele, who plays glee club’s obnoxious-yet-talented singer Rachel Berry, and Jane Lynch, who plays Will’s nemesis, the bare-knuckle-competitive coach of the Cheerios (WMHS’s championship-winning chearleading squad), Sue Sylvester. We got the three stars on the phone today to ask about their red-hot new show and find out what it was like to be nominated for Globes just halfway through its first season. Read the Q&A with Morrison below, then check out our interviews with Michele and Lynch. ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Have you had time to celebrate? MATTHEW MORRISON: It’s really just talking to friends and family and responding to emails. It’s just been a nonstop morning. Did you wake up early to watch the nominations? No. I didn’t. My agent called me, but I was kinda tossing and turning all night because I knew it was happening. But I didn’t wanna watch it. It’s been such a great year for you guys, and this must be such a great kind of reward after the first 13 aired. Yeah, well, I’ve had a lot of perspective this morning, just kind of thinking back to when we started this thing and that feeling of hoping people would catch on to it. And then just watching the show come together and being recognized. This is just extra credit now. Have you talked to any of the cast yet? I was doing these interviews and Jane Lynch just called me. But I texted with Lea [Michele] and Dianna [Agron, Quinn] and Jenna [Ushkowitz, Tina] and Chris [Colfer, Kurt]. Read More |
"Glee" creator Ryan Murphy told TheWrap that when it returns from its hiatus on April 13, the show will have even more musical numbers per episode."We've been averaging five or six songs" per episode in the first 15, he said Thursday before the Hollywood Radio and Television Society's Hitmakers lunch. "In the back nine we do an average of eight to 10" songs, he added. "The back nine is about the regionals competition," he continued. Murphy is convinced that the show's unusual rollout helped its launch. Fox aired the pilot following the "American Idol" finale last spring, and then waited four months before launching the series with the rest of its fall shows. Now it's on another four-month break. Murphy said that plan was Fox's idea, although he was consulting on it, and "it definitely paid off. I think it worked because the show is about thinking outside the box, and doing things that are unusual. They picked it up because they didn't want just another network show. They wanted to do something unusual and strange. And so that philosophy has gone into the marketing of it." |
